Rehome Pet

Stray Animals

When someone finds a stray animal, we ask that they first file a report on 24PetConnect. After submitting the report, please contact Animal Resources at 352 264 6870 so we can schedule an intake appointment. Managed intake is a system of scheduling intake appointments that helps the shelter care for animals safely and effectively. Appointments help us avoid overcrowding and ensure every animal receives proper attention. While we will schedule intake at the time you contact us, same day intake is not always possible.

If you need to hold the animal until your appointment, the shelter can provide a temporary crate and food. We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as we work to give each animal the best care possible.

Owner Surrenders

Owner surrenders are accepted by appointment only. When someone contacts the shelter to surrender their pet, they will receive a resource packet with available help, such as low cost veterinary care, local pet food banks, and community support to try to keep their animal at home or rehome the pet on their own before an appointment is scheduled. Owners will be required to show that they have made reasonable efforts to rehome their pet before Animal Resources approves the surrender appointment.

Owner surrenders are accepted on a case by case basis depending on the animal’s behavioral and medical needs and our adoption criteria. If a pet does not meet our adoption criteria, staff will discuss other available options with the owner, including private rehoming, placement with local rescue groups, and when appropriate, humane euthanasia prior to scheduling an appointment. Because of this, we encourage owners to consider surrender only after exploring all other available options.
