October Environmental and Community Horticulture Programs

Florida Friendly LandscapingThe UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce the following Environmental and Community Horticulture Programs for October 2019. These programs are being offered by Dr. Taylor Clem, Environmental and Community Horticulture Agent, at the UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office (2800 N.E. 39th Avenue, Gainesville) unless otherwise indicated.

Gardening with Natives – October 14, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. 

Participants learn about different native plants to help fill their gardens. The program covers shrubs, groundcovers, trees, grasses, and many common and uncommon native plants for the landscape.

The registration fee is $10.00 (includes materials and supplies). Participants must register online (those needing assistance with registering can call the Extension Office at 352-955-2402) by October 11. The program is limited to 45 participants. There are no refunds for the registration fee.

Organic No-Till Vegetable Gardening – October 15, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Cone Park Library (2801 E. University Avenue, Gainesville)

This program introduces organic no-till farming techniques for homes, schools, or community gardens.

There is no registration fee to attend this class, but participants must register online (those needing assistance with registering can call the Extension Office at 352-955-2402). The class is limited to 40 participants.

Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Yard Tour – October 26, from 9 a.m. to noon, at Thelma A. Boltin Center and Duck Pond Neighborhood (516 N.E. 2nd Ave, Gainesville) with Alachua County’s Environmental Protection Department

Participants take a walking tour of recognized Florida-Friendly Landscapes around Northeast Gainesville. They visit with homeowners, Master Gardener volunteers, and County staff to learn more about the Florida-Friendly Program.

There is no registration fee to attend this event, but participants should register online (those needing assistance with registering can call the Extension Office at 352-955-2402). The event starts at the Thelma A. Boltin Center where information, maps, and program will be provided.
