These programs are being offered by Dr. Tatiana Sanchez, Commercial Horticulture Agent, at the UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office (2800 N.E. 39th Avenue, Gainesville) unless otherwise indicated.

Beekeeping Series – Pest & Disease Management – July 13, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the UF Entomology & Nematology Department (1881 Natural Areas Drive, Gainesville)

This workshop teaches about causes of honeybee colony losses, queen issues, and pest management (special emphasis on Varroa Mite). Because live bees will be used, participants are asked to dress in protective clothing (closed toe shoes, long sleeves, or a beekeeping suit if available).

The registration fee is $15.00. Participants must register online by Monday, July 8 (those needing assistance with registering can call the Extension Office at 352-955-2402). There are no refunds for the registration fees.

Green Industries Best Management Practices – July 30, from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

This workshop is designed to provide training in Best Management Practices for anyone working in the lawn, landscape, pest control, or municipal grounds areas. This is a required training class for all commercial and institutional fertilizer applicators in Alachua County according to the Alachua County Fertilizer Standards and Management Practices Code.

Best Management Practices (BMP) are focused on reducing non-point source pollution resulting from fertilization or pesticide application. In some areas, you need to be certified in the BMPs to be able to bid on jobs or have commercial customers.

This workshop offers CEUs for pesticide license holders. For CEUs, participants must get their form signed before leaving. Continuing Education Units will be offered in the following categories: 2 Core and 2 Ornamental & Turf, 2 Limited Commercial Landscape Maintenance categories.

The registration fee is $25 and includes course material and lunch. Participants must register online by Friday, July 26 (those needing assistance with registering can call the Extension Office at 352-955-2402). There are no refunds for registration fees.
