April Environmental and Community Horticulture Programs

The UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce the following Environmental and Community Horticulture Programs for April 2019. These programs are offered by Dr. Taylor Clem, Environmental & Community Horticulture Agent, and/or the Alachua County Master Gardener Volunteers, at the UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office (2800 N.E. 39th Avenue, Gainesville) unless otherwise indicated.

Shade Gardening – April 4, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the Newberry Branch Library (110 S. Seaboard Drive, Newberry). A Master Gardener volunteer conducts this program.

The class will cover plants used for areas with shade, including groundcovers, perennials, shrubs, and trees.

There is no registration fee. Participants must register by calling 352-337-6209 (voicemail). It is limited to 40 participants.

Blueberry Gardening – April 8, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. A Master Gardener volunteer conducts this program.

Blueberries can be grown successfully in Florida’s home gardens. Alachua County is one of the top blueberry producing counties in the state. The key to blueberry growing success is to pick the right variety for the climate. This class covers selection, planting, fertilizing and pruning. 

The registration fee is $10.00 and covers course material and supplies. Participants must register online. The class is limited to 40 participants. There are no refunds for the registration fee.

Turfgrass Workshop – April 13, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

UF/IFAS Alachua County’s Environmental and Community Horticulture Agent, Dr. Taylor Clem will teach about the best-management practices for managing turfgrass around homes. Through classroom and fieldwork activities, the class will teach turfgrass management to conserve water, fertilizing appropriately, and managing pests responsibly.

The classroom portion of the workshop will be conducted at the Extension Office, followed by fieldwork activities at Fred Cone Park (2801 E. University Avenue, Gainesville).

The registration fee is $25.00 and covers course material, supplies, refreshments and lunch. Participants must register online. The class is limited to 25 participants. There are no refunds for the registration fee.
