Alachua County is seeking applicants to fill upcoming Rural Concerns Advisory Committee (RCAC) vacancies.
There are openings for three members actively involved in agriculture and/or silviculture, with two terms ending Sept. 30, 2029, and one ending Sept. 30, 2028. There is one opening for a member residing in the unincorporated area outside the urban cluster with a term ending Sept. 30, 2029.
The RCAC was created in 2003 to establish the importance of the county’s rural, unincorporated agricultural and historic settlements. The committee assists in the development and evaluation of policies and programs affecting the rural areas of the county, represents the rural areas in the county’s various community planning processes and hearings, and assists in the recognition and determination of the needs of the county’s rural residents and advising the board accordingly. The committee has recently provided input on a range of rural matters including the county’s Agricultural Land Protection Strategy, a potential local food hub, and regulations addressing rural subdivision road lengths, agritourism offsite impacts and raising poultry for residential use.
The committee meets in person, typically on the third Tuesday of each month at 4 p.m. at the UF/IFAS Alachua County Extension Office in Newberry and the Health Department in Gainesville. Meetings generally last one to two hours depending on the agenda.
