The Greater Gainesville Chamber of Commerce has recognized Olajuwon White, director of the Alachua County Veteran Services Office, with its 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award during the chamber’s 2026 Veterans Appreciation Luncheon.
In addition to receiving this distinguished recognition, White served as the luncheon’s keynote speaker, sharing his personal journey as a veteran, his professional career, and the purpose behind his nearly 20-year commitment to serving veterans and their families.
Olajuwon’s commitment to serving the veteran community began following his military service, when he focused on helping veterans navigate employment opportunities, access workforce training and prepare for successful transitions into the civilian workforce. His early work included providing instruction, employment guidance and career development support to veterans seeking to establish themselves beyond military service.
That commitment has continued throughout his career, evolving into veteran benefits advocacy, claims representation and comprehensive support services. Today, as director of the Alachua County Veteran Services Office, White leads efforts to ensure veterans and their families receive access to the benefits, resources and support they have earned through their service. Previously, White served as Director of Levy County Veteran Services and as Field Examiner with the Department of Veteran Affairs.
During his keynote address, White reflected on the experiences that shaped his commitment to public service and the importance of understanding the individual stories behind every veteran. His message emphasized that serving veterans is more than helping them access benefits; it is about listening, building trust, providing guidance, and ensuring they do not have to navigate the challenges of life after military service alone.
“This recognition is especially meaningful because it represents a journey that has always been about service and purpose,” White said. “My commitment to veterans began after my own military service, and it has remained at the center of everything I do. Whether helping a Veteran prepare for employment, navigate the transition to civilian life, or access the benefits they have earned, the mission has always been the same: to serve those who have served us.”
The Lifetime Achievement Award adds to Olajuwon’s list of accomplishments, including the 2023 Veteran of the Year Award for Florida’s Third Congressional District and the 2024 Greater Gainesville Chamber of Commerce Veteran Impact Award.
