In celebration of National Volunteer Week (April 19 – 25, 2026), Alachua County is proud to recognize the dedicated AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers who serve through the Foster Grandparent Program, a division of Alachua County Community Support Services.
Since 1973, the Foster Grandparent Program, sponsored by the Alachua County Commission, has connected older adult volunteers with children in need of additional academic and emotional support. Serving as mentors and tutors in schools, Head Start centers, daycares, and community centers across the county, these volunteers have made a lasting impact on thousands of young lives over the past 53 years.
“The Foster Grandparent Program is a powerful example of how volunteerism strengthens our community,” said Program Specialist Theresa Jewell. “We are proud to support and celebrate the AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers who give their time, compassion, and experience to help children succeed.”
Recognizing Outstanding Volunteers
Several Foster Grandparent Program volunteers were recently honored by their respective schools as “Outstanding Volunteers”:
- Madelyn Brandt, serving at Norton Elementary since September 2024.
- Henry Callicut, serving at Stephen Foster Elementary since January 2014.
- Catherine Robinson, serving at Metcalfe Elementary since June 2010.
- Denise Tumbleson, serving at High Springs Community School since September 2019.
These individuals exemplify the dedication and care that define the Foster Grandparent Program. Alachua County extends its heartfelt congratulations and gratitude for its exceptional service.
Volunteers Make a Difference
The program continues to seek compassionate individuals aged 55 and older to serve as mentors and tutors for children throughout Alachua County. The program is open to income-eligible residents and provides meaningful opportunities to give back while building connections within the community.
Participation in the program has been shown to improve physical and mental well-being, reduce social isolation, and foster a strong sense of purpose. Volunteers also receive benefits including transportation assistance, meals, stipends, and ongoing recognition for their service.
Applications are now being accepted, with training for new volunteers scheduled to begin in September 2026.
