The Alachua County Environmental Protection Department and UF/IFAS Extension are pleased to announce a rain barrel and compost bin sale in partnership with Rain Water Solutions, offering residents an affordable and practical way to conserve water and reduce waste. The deadline to place online orders is April 29, 2026, at 11 p.m.
Through this limited-time program, residents can purchase high-quality rain barrels for $85 each. These barrels capture and store rainwater from rooftops, reducing stormwater runoff. Rain barrels provide a simple and sustainable water source for landscape irrigation, helping homeowners reduce utility costs while supporting water conservation efforts that protect our springs and water supply.
Residents also have the option to purchase 65-gallon compost bins for $77 each. These bins are easy to assemble and are designed with multiple access doors for convenient use. Composting allows homeowners to recycle yard and kitchen waste, such as leaves, grass clippings, and food scraps, into nutrient-rich material that improves soil health. Under proper conditions, compost can be produced in as little as six months, reducing landfill waste while creating a valuable resource for gardens.
Rain barrels and compost bins are available for purchase online through the program website. Orders must be placed in advance. Pre-purchased items will be available for convenient drive-through pickup on Saturday, May 9, at one of two locations: the UF/IFAS Extension Office in Newberry or the Alachua County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center in Gainesville. Additional pickup details are provided at the time of purchase.
“This program provides residents with an easy and effective way to make a positive environmental impact at home,” said Alachua County Water Conservation Senior Planner Eliana Bardi. “By capturing rainwater, we can collectively reduce stormwater runoff and help preserve our natural water resources.”
With Mother’s Day falling the day after the pickup event, a rain barrel or compost bin can also serve as a thoughtful and environmentally friendly gift for those looking to celebrate with something both practical and meaningful.
