Nominations Needed for West Lawn Statue

Alachua County is soliciting nominations for names of prominent, deceased, African American Alachua County citizens to be the basis for a “Call to Artist” for a statue erected on the West Lawn of the County Administration Building (12 S.E. 1st Street, Gainesville).

The statue will be placed on an existing 12' x 12' concrete slab. The winning submittal would be the inspiration for a Call to Artist for an artist to fabricate and install the statue. Those who submit ideas are excluded from applying for the Call to Artist to fabricate and install the art.

One-page submittals should include a photo of the nominated individual and up to a 100-word synopsis of why they should be honored.  Nominations must be submitted online by midnight, Friday, August 27, 2021.

Submitted nominations will be shortlisted to the top three by the Alachua County Community Remembrance Project Committee and forwarded to the Alachua County Historical Commission for vetting. They will then be sent to the County Commission for final selection.
