March Family and Consumer Sciences Programs

​The UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce the following Family and Consumer Sciences programs for March 2018. These programs are offered by Martha B. Maddox, County Extension Agent IV, at the UF/IFAS Extension Office (2800 N.E. 39th Ave., Gainesville).

Alachua County Master Food and Nutrition Volunteer Program Interviews - This program is designed to provide food and nutrition training for selected individuals in Alachua County.

Master Food & Nutrition Volunteer Training will be held in April 2018 (dates will be announced after interviews).  Individuals will complete 40 hours of training over seven days. Training sessions will be conducted from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Applications for a limited number of openings are now being taken. Interviews will be setup after applications are received. Individuals must agree to a reference and background check, attend face-to-face 40 hour training, pass the test to become a Certified Master Food and Nutrition Volunteer and commit to donating 40 hours of approved service back to the community within one year of training. They must also agree to follow rules and guidelines set forth by UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County.

A Master Food & Nutrition Volunteer will give their volunteer hours to the UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office in many ways. They will be assisting the agent with nutrition demonstrations and educational projects, assist and coordinate Farmers Market displays and demonstrations, set up displays/demonstrations at health fairs, libraries, and grocery stores plus teaching foods classes.

Deadline to apply is March 13. Training cost is $175.00 (includes lab supplies, training materials and volunteer notebook) if you are accepted.

Spice Up Your Life With Herbs Workshop – March 12, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Topics include tips and suggestions for using herbs to reduce sodium in the diet. Individuals will take home herb blends and a booklet with herb information. 

The registration fee is $15.00. Attendees must register online by March 7. Subject to cancellation, if less than ten people register. Registration fees are not refundable unless the workshop is cancelled.
