June Commercial Horticulture Programs

vegetablesThe UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce the following Commercial Horticulture Programs for June 2019. These programs are being offered by Dr. Tatiana Sanchez, Commercial Horticulture Agent, at the UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office (2800 N.E. 39th Avenue, Gainesville) unless otherwise indicated.

Pesticide Training for Private Applicator and Ag Row Crops – A Review – June 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (with Dr. Kevin Korus, Agriculture & Natural Resources Agent)

This workshop is designed to provide training for the private applicator agricultural pest control license. The private applicator license is required for anyone that applies restricted use pesticides to their own farm, greenhouse or nursery. CEU's will be available. If taking the exam for Private Applicator or Ag Row Pest Control immediately after the training, it is important to apply in advance at through the Division of Agricultural Environmental Services Licensing website (exam takers must bring their voucher number).

The registration fee is $20.00 (covers materials and lunch). Participants must register online (those needing assistance with registering can call the Extension Office at 352-955-2402) by May 31 (late registration fee is $30.00). There are no refunds for the registration fees. The program is limited to 20 participants.

Disease ID for Vegetable and Agronomic Crops Workshop – June 21, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Suwanee Valley Agricultural Extension Center (8202 CR 417, Live Oak) with Dr. Kevin Korus, Agriculture & Natural Resources Agent.

This program covers principles of plant disease, including macro and microscopic diagnostic procedures, hands-on identification of plant diseases for agronomic and vegetable crops. Several of the major agronomic and horticultural crops grown in the area and the diseases that affect them will be discussed. The program concludes with a discussion on plant disease management.

A maximum of six Continuing Education Units will be offered in the following categories:
3 – Private Applicator
3 – Agriculture Row Crop
3 – Agriculture Tree Crop
3 – Core 487 (maximum will be 6 CEUs)
3 – Core 482
3 – Soil and Greenhouse Fumigation
3 – Ornamental and Turf Pest Control

Participants must register online (those needing assistance with registering can call the Extension Office at 352-955-2402) by June 17. The registration fee is $65.00 (primary participant), $45.00 for secondary participant (the fee includes lunch). The program is limited to 20 participants. There are no refunds for the registration fees.

Limited Commercial Landscape Maintenance Workshop – June 27, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Limited Commercial Landscape Maintenance Workshop trains commercial landscape maintenance personnel to make correct pesticide applications to ornamentals and plant beds only. Attendance to the full day is required before sitting for the licenses exam. Those wanting to take the exam must apply in advance at the Division of Agricultural Environmental Services Licensing website and click “pest control” followed by “limited licenses.” Exam takers should pay online (exam takers must bring their printed receipt and voucher number).

Up to six CEUs will be available in the following categories: three General Standard/Core (Chapters 482 and 487), three Ornamental & Turf, three Limited Lawn & Ornamental, three Limited Landscape Maintenance, three Commercial Lawn & Ornamental.

Individuals seeking recertification may attend the class for four hours. The registration fee is $30.00 per person (includes lunch). Participants must register online (those needing assistance with registering can call the Extension Office at 352-955-2402) by June 24. Santa Fe and UF employees can attend this class and pay a $10.00 registration fee. They need to bring Santa Fe and UF employee ID numbers. There are no refunds for registration fees.
