January Family and Consumer Sciences Programs

The UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce the following Family and Consumer Sciences programs for January 2019. These programs are being offered by Martha B. Maddox, County Extension Agent IV, at the UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office (2800 N.E. 39th Avenue, Gainesville). The workshops are subject to cancellation if less than ten people are registered. If a workshop is cancelled, the registration fee will be refunded.

Spice Up Your Life the Healthy Way with Herbs – January 10, from 10 a.m. to noon

This class will discuss tips and suggestions for using herbs and spices to reduce sodium in the diet, how to take your favorite recipe and reduce the sodium, what herbs and spices complement each other and can replace each other. Individuals will take home some herb blends and booklet with herb information.

Participants must register online. The registration fee is $15 and the deadline is January 7. There are no refunds for registration fees.

Meals in a Minute! “From the Instant Pot to the Table or Freezer” – January 15, from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

This class teaches how to reduce cooking time by 80% with an Instant Pot, selection and how to use an Instant Pot, preparing a meal in minutes for the table or for the freezer, planning meals for a week or month using the Instant Pot, preparing frozen meat that is tender, preparing a meal in one pot and much more. Individuals will taste test a variety of dishes and take home a booklet with Instant Pot information, meal plans and grocery list. 

Participants must register online. The registration fee is $25 and the deadline is January 10. There are no refunds for registration fees.

Cleaning Naturally – January 17, from 10 a.m. to noon

This class will cover making natural household cleaners. Attendees will make several cleaners such as all-purpose cleaner, carpet & mattress freshener, room spray and deodorizer, window cleaner, laundry detergent and more.

Participants must register online. The registration fee is $20 and the deadline is January 11. There are no refunds for registration fees.

Chocolate, Savory Mixes and More Gift Ideas to Save Time and Money – January 24, from 10 a.m. to noon and repeated again from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Participants learn to make a variety of delicious chocolates, savory mixes, dips and other items that can be used as gifts for family and friends for special occasions/holidays. Participants receive a booklet of gift ideas, instructions, and the cost to make each item versus buying it. The workshop consists of both hands on activities and lecture combined. Participants take home a variety of food items demonstrated during the workshop.

Participants must register online. The registration fee is $25 and the deadline is January 18. This class is limited to 40 participants. There are no refunds for registration fees.

Adventures with Rosemary, Parsley, Sage and Thyme – January 31, from 10 a.m. to noon

Seasoning food with rosemary, sage and thyme can help reduce sodium in a diet. Participants learn to enhance the flavor and prepare different foods using these three herbs. Attendees will sample prepared items using each herb or a variety of these herbs. The registration fee includes herbs and an informative booklet on herbs.

Participants must register online. The registration fee is $20 and the deadline is January 25. This class is limited to 48 participants. There are no refunds for registration fees.
