​Alachua County is accepting applications for fiscal year 2027 art grants, offering funding opportunities for local artists, artist collaborators, nonprofit organizations and municipalities to support arts and cultural projects throughout the county.

​The Arts Council of Alachua County is inviting artists, artist collaborators, and non-profit organizations to apply for an art grant. The maximum awards range from $3,000 for individual artists and $5,000 for every city in the county except Gainesville.

​Melrose residents hired a lawyer and sent a letter this week asking Alachua County to investigate the WildFlowers Festival of Music and Dance and whether the March event complied with its temporary use permit.

​F​rom Wednesday until February 28, landscape fertilizers containing nitrogen or phosphorus may not be used. This is because the fertilizers can wash onto stormwater systems, lakes and the aquifer.

​Alachua County is reminding residents that the annual landscape fertilizer ban takes effect today, July 1, 2026, and will remain in place through Feb. 28, 2027.

​One-hundred-twenty sword fighters from across Florida and Georgia competed at the Society of Historical Fencing’s third annual Hot Sword Summer. The tournament, held at the Alachua County Sports and Events Center for the first time, featured Historical European Martial Arts, where fighters use historical literature to understand how weapons were used and replicate those forms in their fights.

​An attorney sent a letter to Alachua County commissioners asking them to investigate whether a music festival held in Melrose last March complied with its county-issued permit.

​In observance of Independence Day, most Alachua County and City of Gainesville offices will be closed on Friday, July 3, 2026. Curbside trash collection will not be affected by the holiday; RTS buses will not run on July 4.
