Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a deadline to apply for the Volunteer Phone Counseling Training?

There is no deadline to apply prior to the next start of training. However, applying earlier provides our team adequate time to review your application and contact you if needed.

Is the Volunteer Phone Counseling Training in person?

The entire eight-week training is held virtually over Zoom. While this provides easier access to training, we do ask that you participate from a quiet and confidential space. Later parts of training, namely observation and supervised shifts, have the option of being either virtual or in person.

Do I have to come to the Crisis Center to do my Volunteer Phone Shifts?

Phone shifts can be done from the phone room at the Center or remotely using your own device.

I can’t make the next training with my schedule. When is the next one?

We hold three Volunteer Phone Trainings each year. They typically begin each January, May, and September.

Does your volunteer opportunity require a commitment?

Yes. We ask that each potential volunteer commit to completing 24 regularly scheduled 4-hour phone counselor shifts, with six of these shifts covering part of overnight hours (12:00 a.m-8:00 a.m.). This typically takes about 6 months to complete after graduation from phone training. Because we answer 24/7 crisis lines, phone shifts can be flexibly scheduled around other commitments.

What is the schedule of the eight-week training?

Training begins with one half-day Saturday (12:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m.) followed by eight weeks of trainings on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. Towards the end of training, there are two flexibly scheduled observation shifts that typically last 4-5 hours.

What if I still have more questions?

Please do not hesitate to reach out to Kevin Sosa, Training Coordinator, with any further questions by email at or phone at 352-264-6781.
