Toxic Round Up Event Collects Hazardous Waste

​The Alachua County Household Hazardous Waste Department, in partnership with the City of Gainesville will sponsor a free “Toxic Round-Up” collection event to properly dispose of and recycle common household waste items that cannot be collected curbside. Residents can bring hazardous waste items to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Multipurpose Center (1028 NE 14th Street, Gainesville) on Saturday, August 21, and Saturday, October 2, 2021, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

This event helps prevent accidental exposure to individuals or our environment when toxic materials are improperly discarded. Materials collected at this event will be recycled, neutralized, or sent to a hazardous waste incinerator for proper disposal.

Items that will be accepted:

  • Paints and paint thinners
  • Aerosol cans
  • Oil filters and automotive fluids (oil, gasoline, brake fluid, radiator fluid, etc.)
  • Computers, TVs and electronics (small appliances such as microwaves)
  • Solvents, corrosives, pool chemicals & household cleaners
  • Fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, pesticides & poisons
  • Batteries (all types: car, rechargeable, alkaline, button)
  • Fluorescent lamps, CFL light bulbs, and Christmas lights
  • Sharps (syringes, needles, lancets, etc.)
  • Pharmaceuticals (pills, medicines) and OTC Meds
  • Roof tar and driveway sealer
  • Used cooking oil, propane tanks, and thermostats

Items that will NOT be accepted:

  • A/C units and large appliances
  • Tires, construction debris, pallets, pressure treated wood
  • Recyclables, scrap metal, yard waste or household garbage
