2016 Great Alachua County Tornado Drill

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL – As part of Severe Weather Awareness Week, Alachua County Emergency Management invites residents to participate in the “2016 Great Alachua County Tornado Drill” on February 24, 2016, at 10 a.m. This drill encourages residents to practice the actions they would take if a tornado threatened their area, while having fun on social media.

To participate:

  • Follow Alachua County Emergency Management on Facebook and/or Twitter.
  • At 10 a.m. on February 24, find your shelter and take a selfie
  • Post the selfie to Alachua County Emergency Management’s Facebook page, or Tweet the photo using #Gatornado.

The best #Gatornado photo will receive a NOAA Weather Radio.

Emergency Management Director David Donnelly stated, “We are in the middle of a strong El Nino season, which increases the potential for severe weather, including tornadoes.” He continued, “Our intent with this drill is to give the citizens of Alachua County the opportunity to think about what they would do if a tornado were threatening their area, and then take the appropriate action. This is also a great opportunity for businesses to discuss protective actions with their employees. We wanted to add some fun into the drill, so the selfie photo competition is a way for everyone to share their tornado drill experience- whether at work or at home. We look forward to seeing everyone’s photos.”
