Grass Clippings Public Outreach Campaign

Monday, May 9, 2011 9:45 AM

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - Alachua County, the City of Gainesville, the Florida Department of Transportation, and Kangaroo Express invite citizens to join in a new campaign aimed at keeping grass off the streets. The campaign encourages lawn care professionals and homeowner associations to use free temporary signs while working in an area, to ensure that people know that they intend to clean up yard waste before leaving the site. The campaign will distribute baseball hats and vehicle magnets (while supplies last) to those who sign a pledge to do their part.  To get free campaign materials, visit one of the following Kangaroo Express locations during the week of May 16, 2011.

Visit these Gainesville locations from 7 a.m. – 10 a.m. for campaign information:

Monday 5/16- Store 1301 (7501 West Newberry Road)
Tuesday 5/17- Store 6162 (7302 SW Archer Road)
Wednesday 5/18- Store 1416 (1515 North Main Street)
Thursday 5/19- Store 1304 (5310 NW 13th Street)
Friday 5/20- Store 6146 (3525 SW 34th Street)

"Lawn clippings and leaves clog stormwater collection systems, and lead to flooding and increased maintenance costs for taxpayers. Clippings end up in creeks, lakes, or stormwater basins where they consume oxygen and release nutrients as they degrade" said Alachua County Environmental Protection Department, Water Conservation Coordinator Stacie Greco. "This can lead to algal blooms and fish kills. Landscaping debris in the roads also creates a hazard for motorists and cyclists."
