April Environmental & Community Horticulture Programs

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - The UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce the following Environmental & Community Horticulture Programs for April 2017. These programs are being offered by Dr. Denise DeBusk, Environmental & Community Horticulture Agent, at the UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office (2800 N.E. 39th Avenue, Gainesville) unless otherwise indicated.

Florida-Friendly Landscaping Series: Fertilize Appropriately – April 4, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

This class provides information on how to fertilize turf and plants appropriately. There will be hands-on demonstrations and activities.

Registration cost is $5. Participants can register online (for an additional fee). There are no refunds for registration costs. This class is limited to 30 participants.

Florida-Friendly Landscaping Series: Manage Stormwater Runoff and Build Rain Barrels – April 6, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Learn about the effects of stormwater runoff on the environment and how to reduce the amount of runoff from the landscape. Participants will have an opportunity to make & purchase a rain barrel.

Registration is $5.00 for class and $60 for each rain barrel. Participants can register online (for an additional fee). There are no refunds for registration costs. This class is limited to 30 participants.

Growing Grapes – April 11, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Participants learn how to grow grapes in Alachua County. Planting, pruning, fertilization, watering and pest control will be covered.

Registration is $5.00. Participants can register online (for an additional fee). There are no refunds for registration costs.

Florida-Friendly Landscaping Series: Right Plant, Right Place – April 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

This workshop provides information on choosing the right plants, planting, and maintaining them.

Registration is $15.00 for class or $20 per couple. Participants can register online (for an additional fee). There are no refunds for registration costs. This class is limited to 30 participants.

Made for Shade – April 19, from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Kanapaha Botanical Gardens (4700 S.W. 58th Drive, Gainesville)

The class covers plants used for areas with shade, including groundcovers, perennials, shrubs, and trees. After a presentation in the classroom, participants explore the Camellia/Azalea garden on a guided tour highlighting shade plants. The class will be led by Master Gardeners, Lissa Campbell and Irma Velez.

The class is free, but participants must pay the entrance fee into Kanapaha Botanical Gardens ($8.00) at the door and can explore the rest of the garden after the class. There is no cost for members. Participants can register online. This class is limited to 30 participants.

Florida-Friendly Landscaping Series: Attract Wildlife – April 25, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Participants learn what can be added to the landscape to attract birds, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other wildlife.

Registration cost is $5. Participants can register online (for an additional fee). There are no refunds for registration costs. This class is limited to 30 participants.
