About

The Arts Council of Alachua County (ACAC) serves as a resource for local artists and arts agencies, including all municipalities, throughout Alachua County. The Arts Council prepares applications for state and federal grants and re-grants eligible grants to local artists and local arts agencies. It prepares applications for eligible state and federal grants to provide enhanced resources for local artists and local arts agencies, and educates and advocates at the state and federal level on issues affecting the arts.

The Council also promotes and facilitates the inclusion of art into an established process that connects artists, partners, and communities for the purpose of enhancing the vitality of the County. The ACAC is responsible for oversight, administration and promotion of Art Tag proceeds and Local Arts Agency dedicated funding. It develops an inclusive strategic plan for County-wide arts and cultural assets that are reviewed and updated annually and reports annually, or as necessary, to the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners on the goals and accomplishments of the ACAC.

Bounce Art Installation

In June 2022, the Alachua County Commission commissioned Alachua County-based artist Jenn Garrett to create "Bounce," one of three artworks funded through the County's Art in Public Places program for the new Alachua County Sports Event Center, which opened earlier this year. The sculpture was installed on Thursday, September 28.

“Let the Legend Live On” is a 16x24 mural by Art of Anon. The piece honors legendary University of Florida track coach Jimmy Carnes; Neal Walk, a basketball player who (to this day) remains the Florida Gators’ all-time rebounds leader, who played professionally for the Phoenix Suns; Aury Cruz, an indoor and beach volleyball player, who was a 2008 Olympian, inducted into the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame as a “Gator Great” in 2014; and Hazel Clark, a middle-distance runner, who was a 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympian, inducted into the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame as a “Gator Great” in 2012.

“Bounce” is a 14’ sculpture by local Alachua County artist, Jennifer Garrett, that celebrates the vitality of sportsmanship. The arcing forms reflect both the arc of a bouncing ball and track and field events like high jump and hurdles. Atop the arcs are super-sized stainless-steel basketballs, volleyballs, and pickleballs. Each ball is roughly 3 times the size of the balls used at the Sports Event Center, making it the focal point of Celebration Pointe Avenue.

14” sports themed Silhouettes, by Gus and Lina Fine Art, adorn the exterior east wall of the Sports Event Center. The symbolic imagery of pickleball, basketball, cheer, track and field, baseball, and volleyball visually communicate the unique identity of the Sports Event Center and celebrate the building’s interior function allowing millions of I-75 by-passers each year easy recognition of the building’s function.
