Press Release: Phone Outage Update

Wednesday, February 11, 2009 12:00 AM

3:56 p.m.

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - It is anticipated the time to repair the fiber optic line which was cut and resulted in loss of phone usage (both landline and wireless) affecting 7,000 citizens will be several hours.

A back-up system in the City of Alachua has been activated and 911 calls in certain areas of the City of Alachua are being routed to the Alachua Police Department.  Combined Communications Center Personnel have been sent to receive these calls for processing and dispatch of emergency personnel.  However, due to the location of line cut, other areas affected by this outage will still not be able to make emergency calls.  The Alachua County Department of Public Safety reminds all citizens unable to make emergency calls to respond to their closest police or fire station.  Again, these locations are listed below:

Alachua Police Department:  15000 NW 142nd Terrace, Alachua
Fire Station 21: 15040 NW US 441, Alachua
High Springs Police Department:  110 NW 2nd Avenue, High Springs
High Springs Fire Department:  205 NW 1st Avenue, High Springs
La Crosse Volunteer Fire Department (ASO Staffed):  20421 N SR 121, La Crosse

As soon as full service is restored, we will notify affected residents.
