ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - On May 7, 2008 the City of Newberry City Commission passed Ordinance 09-08, which requests and authorizes the Law Enforcement Municipal Services Taxing Unit (MSTU) to extend Sheriff Services and patrols into the city limits of Newberry, which does not have a municipal police department.  This authorizes and requests that the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) impose the MSTU tax within the City of Newberry to cover the costs of the service.

Reacting to this official request by the Newberry City Commission, the BOCC has begun proceedings to pass an ordinance that authorizes the imposition of the Law Enforcement MSTU within the City of Newberry.

At their May 13, 2008 meeting, the BOCC authorized the advertisement of the ordinance, which will be on the May 27, 2008 Commission meeting agenda.

Citizens wishing input into this process are urged to attend the May 27, 2008 Public Hearing.  The meeting will be at 5 p.m. in room 209 on the second floor of the County Administration Bldg. located at 12 SE 1st Street, Gainesville.
