Koppers Clean-up Plan

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - The USEPA Region 4 “Proposed Clean-up Plan for the Koppers Portion of the Cabot Koppers Superfund Site” was released on Thursday July 15, 2010.  

The USEPA has scheduled a Public Information Meeting to present the Proposed Plan on August 5, 2010 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Stephen Foster Elementary School, 3800 NW 6th Street, Gainesville, FL.  The USEPA has also established an initial 30 day public comment period ending August 15, 2010 to receive public comments on the plan.

The City of Gainesville plans to request an extension of this public comment period to allow sufficient time for review and comment by the public and the Local Intergovernmental Team consisting of representatives from the City of Gainesville, Alachua County Environmental Protection, Gainesville Regional Utilities and the Alachua County Health Department and their consultants.  The Local Team plans public meetings with citizens and the City of Gainesville and Alachua County Commissions to receive input and prepare comments to USEPA on the Proposed Plan.  The dates for these meetings have not been  set.   

 “The Alachua County Environmental Protection Department will continue to work in coordination with the City of Gainesville and other members of the local team to review and provide comments to USEPA on the Proposed Plan,” said Chris Bird, Alachua County Environmental Protection Director,”  We will be looking for ways to improve the plan based on concerns and comments we receive from our technical team, the public and our local elected officials.  Our comments will be oriented to improving the protection to our drinking water, protecting adjacent neighborhoods, and meeting local expectations for the future use of the site.”
