March Commercial Horticulture Programs

beesThe UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce the following Commercial Horticulture Programs for March 2019. These programs are being offered by Dr. Tatiana Sanchez, Commercial Horticulture Agent, at the UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office (2800 N.E. 39th Avenue, Gainesville) unless otherwise indicated.

Beekeeping: Colony Management & Swarm Control – March 2, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the UF Honey Bee Lab (1881 Natural Area Drive, Gainesville)

This class is designed for beginner and intermediate beekeepers. Live bees will be used. Participants should dress in protective clothing (closed toe shoes, long sleeves, bring your beekeeping suit if available). This class will demonstrate how to perform colony splits to prevent swarming.

Participants must register online. The registration fee is $15 and includes course material and refreshments. The program is limited to 40 participants, and the registration deadline is March 1. There are no refunds for registration fees.

Pesticide Training for Private Applicator and Ag Row Crops – A Review – March 29, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (with Dr. Kevin Korus, Agriculture & Natural Resources Agent)

This workshop is designed to provide training for the private applicator agricultural pest control license. The private applicator license is required for anyone that applies restricted use pesticides to their own farm, greenhouse or nursery. Topics include private applicator and regulations, equipment calibration and pesticide arithmetic, pesticide safety, and principles of pest control.

Up to four Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be offered for applicators that already have their licenses. CEUs include General Standard Core, Ag Row Crop, Private Applicator and Ag Tree Crop. If taking the exam for Private Applicator or Ag Row Pest Control immediately after the training, register online and bring the voucher number to the workshop.

Participants can register online until March 27. The registration fee is $20 and includes course material and lunch. Those registering after March 27 or if paying at the door, the registration fee is $25. There are no refunds for registration fees.
