June Family and Consumer Sciences Programs

The UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce the following Family and Consumer Sciences programs for June 2018. These programs are offered by Martha B. Maddox, County Extension Agent IV, at the UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office (2800 N.E. 39 Ave., Gainesville).

Spice Up Your Cooking Adventures with Basil by Saving Thyme with the Instant Pot – June 5, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Cook a meal in the Instant Pot using basil and thyme to replace salt. Reduce sodium and save time plus enjoy a delicious sodium free meal. Attendees will also take home herbs to recreate this meal.

The registration fee is $20.00 (includes herbs and materials). Participants must register online by May 31. There are no refunds for registration costs, and the workshop is subject to cancellation if less than ten people register (If the workshop is cancelled, the registration fee will be reimbursed).

Fresh Start – June 20, from 10 a.m. to noon, and repeated from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Those with a financial history that includes bounced checks or overdrawn funds are encouraged to attend the Fresh Start workshop. It will help participants get their finances back on track, develop healthier financial patterns and to open an account with a new bank or credit union. At the end of the course, those who pass a financial management test earn a certificate to open an account with a bank or credit union participating in the Fresh Start program. Fresh Start covers the basics of financial management, including creating a spending plan and preventing identity theft. Attendees also get hands on practice balancing a checkbook and mapping out a personal budget. The program goal is to help people make a habit of knowing where their money is going.

The registration fee is $25.00, and there are two options to register. Participants can register by mail by completing an application, and mailing it with money order to:

Take Control of Your Finances with a Fresh Start – June 20, 10 a.m. to noon and repeated from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
This workshop is for those who need help controlling their finances, using SMART goals, and developing a successful spending and savings plan. This workshop teaches how to choose the right bank or credit union and how to keep financial records.

The registration fee is $25.00, and there are two options to register. Participants can register by mail by completing an application, and mailing it with money order to:

Cooking with Herbs and Spices – June 25, from 10 a.m. to noon

This workshop teaches the basics of cooking with herbs and spices to replace sodium in a diet without overpowering food items. It includes tasting the variety of dishes demonstrated. Participants take home herbs to use.

The registration fee is $20.00 (includes herbs and materials). Participants must register online by June 20. There are no refunds for registration costs (unless the workshop is cancelled). It is subject to cancellation if less than ten people register.

Cooking Adventures with Rosemary, Sage, Parsley & Thyme – June 27, from 10 a.m. to noon

This workshop teaches how to prepare a variety of items using rosemary, sage, parsley & thyme to replace sodium. Participants take home herbs to recreate the items demonstrated. Participants also learn to save time using the Instant Pot to prepare some of the items.

The registration fee is $20.00 (includes herbs and materials). Participants must register online by June 22. There are no refunds for registration costs (unless the workshop is cancelled). It is subject to cancellation if less than ten people register.
