2018 ADA Celebration

The Alachua County Equal Opportunity Office along with the City of Gainesville Office of Equal Opportunity, the Center for Independent Living and MV Transportation, Inc. will host the Annual ADA Celebration to celebrate the 28th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The event is on Thursday, July 26, 2018, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Alachua County Senior Recreation Center (5701 N.W. 34th Blvd., Gainesville). Businesses, agencies, and organizations that offer services to individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend, as are all citizens. The event is free and open to the public, and a light lunch will be available.

This year’s celebration will provide training on “Your Rights and the Responsibilities of Public Agencies & Private Businesses Under the ADA” presented by Jack Humburg of the Southeast ADA Center, and a presentation on “Disability & Health Disparities” from Tony Delisle of the Center for Independent Living.

Alachua County Emergency Management staff will also be available to register individuals requiring special needs assistance during disaster events. Participants are invited to experience accessible voting machines, hosted by the Supervisor of Elections Office.

Passed in July 1990, the ADA prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public.
Free accessible transportation will be provided for persons with special needs through MV Transport.
