Household Hazardous Waste Collection Centers

The HHWCC is Located at 5125 NE 63rd Ave. next to the Leveda Brown Environmental Park and Transfer Station (2 Miles North of the Gainesville Airport off Waldo Rd North of the Airport -- follow the signs)

Materials collected include:

Poisons
Disinfectants, fungicides, furniture polish, flea dips, head lice shampoo, herbicides, insect repellant, insecticides, lead, mercury, mothballs, pesticides, spot removers, window cleaners and wood preservatives or polishes.
Flammable Liquids
Aerosol spray products, degreasers, dry cleaning solvent, furniture strippers, gasoline, paint thinners, lighter fluids, mineral sprits, oil based paints, and epoxies.
Corrosives
Aluminum cleaners, rust removers, ammonia, battery acid, bleach cleaners, carpet cleaners, drain cleaners, oven cleaners, photographic chemicals and solutions, swimming pool chemicals and toilet cleaners.
Used Motor Oil and Filters
Brake Fluid, Transmission Fluid
Automotive Batteries
Antifreeze
Stale Gas
Paints and Other Surface Coatings
Latex paint can be dried to make it non-hazardous and disposed of with normal trash. Take off the lid and allow paint to dry in an area that is well-ventilated, away from sources of ignition, sheltered from the rain and keep away from children and pets. After the paint has hardened, leave the lid off the can (the garbage collector will not pick up paint cans that have lids on them) and place in your trash cart. Other surface coatings such as glues, cements, epoxy resins, shoe polish, nail polish, roofing compounds, fiberglass resins, auto body filler, etc. can be hardened or dried as described for paints disposed of in your trash cart. Oil-based paints should be taken to the HHWCC
Aerosol Containers
If these containers still contain products, they can be taken to the HHWCC. If these containers are empty, they can be placed in your Big Blue container or in the "TIN CAN" container at the rural collection centers.
Dry Cell Batteries
Household batteries such as alkaline, zinc, carbon, lithium, button can be placed in the Big Blue curbside collection container. Automotive batteries should be taken to your neighborhood automotive service center or the HHWCC. NiCad (rechargeable) batteries can be taken to the HHWCC or to any one of several local businesses. Fluorescent Lamps
Mercury-containing devices, fluorescent lamps and other HID lamps should be brought to the HHWCC or to the rural collection centers.
End of Life Electronics (E-Scrap or E-Waste)
Computer toxics logoElectronic Scrap: (E-Scrap or E-Waste) can include but is not limited to computers, printers, copiers, scanners, or monitors. These devices may or may not have another technology "life". E-Scrap is a resource for reuse or recycling. E-Scrap is also composed of hazardous materials and should be treated with greater care than municipal solid waste during disposal.
Un-repairable or obsolete TV's, computers, computer monitors, stereo equipment, VCR's.
If these items are working and useable, please donate to a charitable cause or organization.

The HHWCC will not accept radioactive materials, infectious or biological wastes, asbestos, pressurized gas cylinders (except Propane Tanks), pyrophorics or explosives. Medical Sharps will be accepted on behalf of the Alachua County Public Health Unit, but must be brought in approved Sharps containers.

The Rural Collection Centers

Alachua County collects the following recyclable hazardous waste at five rural solid waste collection facilities:

  • Automotive Fluids
  • Automotive Batteries
  • Dry Cell/Button Batteries (all types)
  • Latex and Oil based Paint
  • Used Oil Filters
  • Fluorescent Tubes
  • Used Motor Oil (5 gal. limit per person)
  • Electronics (computers, TVs, consumer electronics)
  • Aerosol cans

When you arrive at the collection center, ask the attendant to direct you to the proper receptacle. The collection centers will not accept more than five gallons of waste oil per person. Ask your neighborhood automotive service center if they will accept your used oil for recycling. Keep rainwater and leaves from accumulating in the used oil storage container.
