The Department of Community Support Services (DCSS), is under the administrative direction of the County Manager and is funded by the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners. The purpose of the department is to initiate opportunities and services to improve the quality of life for Alachua County residents and the community by providing health and human services that include crisis intervention; community stabilization, revitalization and sustainability; poverty reduction; opportunities for senior residents to volunteer, basic needs assistance; healthcare services; UF/IFAS research based information; veteran services; victim services and rape crisis services.
Currently, DCSS consists of ten offices, which are Administration, CHOICES, Cooperative Extension, the Crisis Center, Partners for a Productive Community, Poverty Reduction Program, Senior Services-Retired and Senior Volunteer Program and Foster Grandparent Program, Social Services, Veteran Services, and Victim Services and Rape Crisis Center.

The Director of the Department, Elmira K. Warren, has released her "Overview of Priorities and Challenges for 2009-2010. This overview highlights Ms. Warren's priorities and challenges for Fiscal Year 2009-2010. Employee morale and the Annual Budget Allocations Process are also highlighted in this document.
The Alachua County Department of Community Support Services is proud to announce the release of its 2008 Annual Report. Elmira K. Warren, Director, states "It is our desire to increase your awareness and understanding of the department and the services we provide. A summary of our accomplishments, adopted budget and the services we provided over the past year are included in this publication.

The 2009 Gainesville - Alachua County Hunger Abatement Plan - "Making Nutrition Accessible to all Citizens", is the product of dedicated citizens of the community. The Hunger Abatement Plan (HAP) was created here, and will become reality here, only if the community as a whole embraces its goals and insists on its implementation.
The Alachua County Health Department (ACHD) is monitoring the outbreak of swine flu. Swine flu is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by a type A influenza virus that regularly causes outbreaks of influenza among pigs. Swine flu viruses do not normally infect humans; however, human infections with swine flu do occur.
