Memorial Day Ceremonies are Moved

The annual Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 28, 2018, is moved to the American Legion Post 16 (4701 N.W. 6th Street, Gainesville). This ceremony is normally held at the Forest Meadows Cemetery, but the weather is predicted to be poor, and the other alternate site is not able to be used. The event begins at 11 a.m., and is free and open to the public.

The Milton Lewis Young Marines Memorial Day Ceremony on Sunday, May 27, 2018, is also moved to the American Legion Post 16. This ceremony is at 10 a.m. This ceremony is normally held at the Evergreen Cemetery, but this too has been moved due to the weather.

These Memorial Day Ceremonies are commemorations to honor and remember veterans, military service members, and those who lost their lives in service to the nation. The Monday event features multiple patriotic presentations from various veteran and military organizations. Presentation of Colors by the Vietnam Veterans of America, an American Flag Ceremony, musical tributes, Congressional, County, City and VA greetings, the Gold Star Families presentation, special remembrance ceremony, a wreath laying, Taps by the Buchholz High School Band, a rifle salute by the Korean War Veterans of America. Forest Meadows Funeral Homes is providing a free barbecue to attendees.

Alachua County Veteran Services Director Kim Davis said, “While the weather may not be cooperating with us, we will still have beautiful and meaningful Memorial Day Ceremonies honoring our heroes.”
