Parks and Recreation

The Alachua County Parks Office is responsible for the design, development, and maintenance of the County park system. Additional responsibilities include the administration of state and federal grants, maintenance agreements, management and securities agreements, construction contracts, and programmed recreation contracts.

The park system consists of 24 parks and the Fairgrounds with a total of 1206 acres and an additional 11 acres of Gainseville Regional Utilities' (GRU) property known as Chapman's Pond.

Mission

To improve the quality of life for citizens of Alachua County by providing for their recreational needs in a cost-effective manner.

Goals

  • To adhere to the comprehensive county wide master plan for the provision of parks, open space and recreation
  • To identify permanent funding sources to meet parks and recreation development and operational needs
  • To actively seek state and federal grants and other sources of grants so as to maximize use of County funds in the development of county parks
  • To maximize use of volunteer groups and sources of free labor for maintaining parks
  • To make available to all citizens of Alachua County a variety of recreational opportunities
  • To design, develop, and maintain county parks so as to be safe, clean, and aesthetically pleasing
