- Identifies and prioritizes County Road System transportation improvement needs
- Provides engineering specification and oversees the preparation of design and construction plans and documents
- Provide engineering assistance to other Public Works offices and programs
- Identifies funding opportunities for improvement of the County Road System through a close working relationship with both Federal and State transportation agencies
- Keeps abreast of Federal, State and District stormwater management permitting criteria
- Provides for transportation planning by maintaining and utilizing a computer mapping and data management system
- Coordinates County Speed Hump Program
- Maintains Concurrency Tables for roadways in unincorporated areas.
- Designs widening, resurfacing, and construction projects for roads, intersections, roundabouts, bike lanes, parking lots and parks
- Advertises design work for bids
- Coordinates activities with consultants and developers to see design projects through to completion.

Traffic Calming & Speed Hump Program
Alachua County strives to be a livable community and we recognize that cut-through traffic and speeding can be a nuisance to residents within the subdivision where it occurs. As a result, the Public Works Department has developed and coordinates the County's Traffic Calming Program.
The Traffic Calming Program consists of identifying candidate neighborhoods, conducting traffic studies and placing appropriate traffic calming devices. Currently, the device most often used is a speed table; however, the department continues to develop other, more innovative and cost-effective solutions.
In order to see if your neighborhood is a good candidate for traffic calming, please send a petition to the Alachua County Public Works Department that identifies the neighborhood and streets where a correctable problem may exist. The petition can be in the form of a letter from a Homeowners' Association or an actual petition signed by 10% of the homeowners or residents along the affected street. All petitions should be sent to the following address:

Once we receive the petition, we will begin the process of evaluation and placing of the traffic calming devices in accordance with the Public Works Department's Neighborhood Traffic Calming Policy.
