Downtown Farmers Garden Oct-Dec 2011 Accomplishments Report

4/3/2012 12:00 AM
DFGAs we are coming up on our second year at the Downtown Farmers Garden, we look back at our Oct-Dec 2011 (First Quarter) accomplishments and highlights.  Thanks to all our volunteers in the first quarter who donated approximately 55 volunteer hours and especially Delta Sigma Theta GEMS and FOG garden intern Jessica Mulvey!  We had a productive winter growing bush beans, basil, sweet potato, eggplant, seminole pumpkins, tomatoes and hot, hot hot habanero peppers were donated to charities at a value of $135.

And we continue to innovate, hosting some unique raised bed designs.  You are welcome to come see our water saving "wicking bed" that is producing some great leafy greens for us right now.

This fall we also initatiated a unique partnership with Gainesville Compost (GC) which serves composting needs of the downtown restaurants.  GC is a great asset to the garden as they are helping us teach the imporantance and process of effective composting.  Check out their three bin station in the back corner.
Thanks to all our Thurday morning volunteers, Grow Gainesville, University of Florida Office of Sustainability and the Downtown Rotary Club who make this space a success!

We look forward to the summer hope to see the community at our April 10, Open House.
