Severe Storm Preparation

12/1/2009 12:00 AM

ALACHUA COUNTY, FLĀ - The National Weather Service in Jacksonville is advising local emergency management officials on a significant storm system that has the potential for severe weather to include damaging winds, tornadoes, heavy rainfall and inland flooding as it approaches the region on Wednesday.

Severe weather is possible but there remains some uncertainty as to how significant the impact will be. While most of the Florida Peninsula is at risk, there is an increased threat for significant severe weather across the North Florida area.

Residents and visitors are reminded that flood-related deaths and injuries can be avoided if people who come upon areas covered with water follow this simple advice: Turn Around Don't Drown.

Citizens should monitor the progress of the storm system as it moves through our area. Please use this time to review your plans and check on items in your disaster supply kit. It is the responsibility of all Floridians to take the necessary steps to prepare themselves and their family.

Remember, a NOAA Weather Radio remains the most effective way to receive timely, and official emergency notifications about weather hazards in your local area. Additional storm information can be found at the Alachua County Emergency Management's website (www.alachuacounty.us/em) or by following them on Twitter and Facebook.

For more information, contact David Donnelly of Alachua County Emergency Management at 352-264-6500.

If you have a disability and need an accommodation in order to participate in a County program, service or public meeting, please contact the Alachua County Equal Opportunity Office at (352)374-5275 at least 3 business days prior to the event. TTY users please call 711 (Florida Relay Service).
