CHOICES Health Education, Wellness, & Disease Management Kick-Off Event

Wednesday, October 15, 2008 1:00 AM
12:45 P.M.

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - A kickoff event for Alachua County's CHOICES Health Education & Wellness and Disease Management Programs will be held October 22nd to introduce the programs to the community. Cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, and illnesses related to smoking are the leading causes of mortality among Alachua County's citizens. These diseases, and the risk factors associated with them - including high blood pressure, high cholesterol and obesity - affect our lives in significant ways. Unfortunately, the prevalence of these illnesses has increased at an alarming rate in the past few years. These health issues are affecting our children and youth at higher rates than ever before, putting them at risk for even more serious problems in early to mid adulthood.

The good news? These diseases can be minimized or prevented through sensible lifestyle changes! A community-wide focus on improved nutrition and weight control, increased physical activity, and tobacco avoidance can reverse these disturbing trends.

On Wednesday, October 22, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., you can take part in free health screenings to evaluate some of your risk factors for many chronic diseases, including blood pressure, body fat percentage, and body mass index (BMI). There will also be fun events including a Poker Walk, dance lessons and demonstrations, 5-a-Day snacks, tips on living a healthier lifestyle, and drawings and prizes.  Find out more about free programs that can help you improve your health, like exercise, smoking cessation, and weight loss.

The kickoff event will be held downtown at the Sun Center, indoors and outdoors. Partners include the Alachua County Health Department, Gainesville Health and Fitness Center, and UF College of Nursing.
