ALACHUA COUNTY - The University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine will hold an adopt-a-thon on Saturday, October 6, 2007 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the College, which is located at 2015 SW 16th Ave., Gainesville.

More than 100 kittens, cats, puppies, and dogs rescued in the Gainesville area will vie to become someone's next best friend and to win a new loving home.

Ray Sim, Director of Alachua County Animal Services, commented, "Many of our animal 'Alumni' will be there, as the local rescue groups have transferred many of these animals from the shelter."

Four rescue groups will be present to offer everything from Chihuahuas, Standard Poodles, Golden Retrievers, Black Labs, Siamese, Himalayans, and the ubiquitous Florida Brown Dogs, in addition to Palmetto Tabby Cats.

The long hot summer has crowded local rescue groups with a record number of pets of all sizes, colors and breeds.  To make more room, rescuers are promoting pet adoptions with special adoption plans, including slashed adoption fees and some special packages in which two bonded pets are adopted for the price of one.

These happy and healthy pets have already been spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and tested for infectious diseases. Each adopted pet will receive a "welcome home" gift bag of treats and toys.

Admission is free and each visitor will receive two free tickets for valuable pet-centric door prizes.
