ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - The Alachua County Barr Hammock Levy Prairie Trailhead (14920 SE 11th Drive, Micanopy) will be temporarily closed for maintenance and earthwork repairs to the levee. These repairs are necessary to maintain the integrity of the levee system, repair the trail surface and clean out the water control structures. The US Army Corps of Engineers will be conducting repairs under the direction of the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Periodic trail closure will begin on June 19, and extend into July depending on weather delays. Visit the Alachua County Forever website for specific dates for trail closure.

For visitor safety, the public is expected to observe all closure and construction warning signs. Unauthorized persons may be cited for trespass and construction site trespass. When work is completed, the County will remove the closure signs and advise the public that the trail is open again.

Barr Hammock Preserve was acquired through the Alachua County Forever Program; the voter-approved initiative to acquire, improve and manage environmentally sensitive lands to protect water resources, wildlife habitat and natural areas suitable for resource based recreation.  The referendum was passed in November 2000. It was funded again by the voters in 2008 with the Wild Spaces and Public Places Referendum.

The Barr Hammock Levy Prairie was acquired in 2009 with funding from the North American Wetlands Conservation Act, Florida Communities Trust, and a generous donation from the Whitehurst Family.
