ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - Alachua County has joined numerous governments across Florida, declaring April, “Water Conservation Month.” The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) is observing Water Conservation Month by airing a radio announcement reminding citizens to maintain their irrigation systems and rainfall shut off devices and to take advantage of rebates offered by GRU.
Alachua County is also starting a new program called “Conservation Champs,” in which County employees will learn how to save water and energy at the office and at home. EPD is also continuing its program of visiting local classrooms to teach elementary age children how and why to use less water.
“We depend on the aquifer for our drinking water, as do our springs, rivers, and lakes. We all need to do our part to use less water everyday.” said Alachua County Water Conservation Coordinator, Stacie Greco. She continued, “Even simple changes like replacing thirsty landscapes with native vegetation that requires less water and chemicals, turning off your automatic irrigation system, and replacing old water fixtures with water efficient faucets, shower heads, sinks, and toilets leaves more water for our springs.”
