Public Meeting on Tower Road Area Projects

Thursday, November 3, 2011 2:15 PM

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL- The Alachua County Public Works Department is presenting four road projects located in the Tower Road area at the Board of County Commissioners Regular Public Hearing, which begins at 5 p.m., on Tuesday, November 8, 2011, at the County Administration Building, room 209 (12 SE 1st Street, Gainesville).

Public Works is seeking direction from the Board on how they wish to proceed with these projects:

·       The Tower Road project with staff recommendations from the Board direction from last year to re-examine the Tower Road project.

·       The SW 61st Street/20th Avenue interesection project, which is associated with the re-opening of 8th Avenue, east of Tower Road. The Board also will be asked to consider completing the sidewalk network on SW 20th/24th Avenue from SW 75th Street to I-75 as a part of this project.

·       An update on the widening of the SW 20th Avenue overpass.

·       Findings on the intersection study of SW 8th Avenue/SW 91st Street.

Beginning in 2003, staff has worked on the design of the Tower Road project with the engineering firm of Causseaux and Ellington, Inc., known as Causseaux, Hewitt and Walpole.  During this design, it became apparent that the Tower Road project would impact several other roadway segments and intersections on the Tower Road grid. In 2005, the engineering firm of HNTB performed a network analysis for the Alachua County Public Works Department as a part of Tower Road design. As a result of that study, staff is presenting these four projects to the Board for consideration as they are all intertwined in some fashion.
