GeoGreen - A Green Map for Alachua County

8/29/2008 9:12 AM

9:20 a.m.

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - The Geographic Information System (GIS),  Division of the Alachua County Growth Management Department has recently developed an in-house green map for Alachua County. The green map, named GeoGreen, is an online interactive mapper located at: http://maps.alachuacounty.us/geogreen

GeoGreen provides a one stop access to green infrastructure data and to important related Countywide studies. It serves over thirty GIS layers with a rich description and documentation and is integrated with pictures, reports, websites, etc. Significant environmental and cultural resources are grouped into three categories:

  • Conservation / Recreation (preservation lands, strategic ecosystems, priority ecological areas, etc.)
  • Cultural / Preservation (farmer markets, community gardens, bookstores (used/new), historic structures, etc.)
  • Bicycle / Pedestrian corridors (trails, bike facilities, scenic roads, future transportation corridors, etc.)

GeoGreen is also fully integrated with the WebGIS Building Permit tracker. It provides live mapping and tracking by location of green buildings. Anyone from the public can use a form at GeoGreen to enter a permit number and upload a scanned image of their Green Building Certificate. After submitting the form, they can immediately view its location plotted on the GeoGreen map. Upon validation of the certificate by the Growth Management staff, GeoGreen will continue to show the location of this green building as part of the countywide Green Buildings layer map.

For more information on GeoGreen please call Juna Papajorgji at 352-384-3180.  For more information on Green Maps and how they support green living please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Map.
