Sewage Overflow Discovered Near County Jail

2/8/2007 4:38 PM

4:40 p.m.

ALACHUA COUNTY - On Wednesday morning, February 7, 2007, County officials responded to a sewage overflow discovered in the vicinity of the Alachua County Jail off of NE 39th Avenue.  The failure of a grinder pump at a County lift station was determined to be the cause of the spill.  County Environmental Protection investigators determined that the spill overflowed into a wetland area but did not impact any area creeks.  Efforts were made to recover and treat the spilled sewage.  An estimated 7,000 gallons of sewage was recovered for proper treatment.

For further information, contact Chris Bird, Alachua County Environmental Protection Department at (352) 264-6802.
