Alachua County Sponsors Sustainability Conference

ALACHUA COUNTY - Alachua County is sponsoring the inaugural conference of "Campus and Community Sustainability: Sharing Best Practices and Visions for Florida's Future" held on the University of Florida campus October 25 and 26, 2006. The conference will provide a venue for the exchange of best practices and visions among Florida's universities, colleges, and communities.

Invited speakers include Carl Hiassen, journalist and best-selling author of well-known "environmental thrillers" and Michael Shuman, attorney and economist and author of several books including the most recent "The SmallMart Revolution: How Local Businesses Are Beating the Global Competition."

Alachua County Manager Randall H. Reid, who will moderate the breakout session "The Role of Local Government in setting Policy that Supports Sustainability," in speaking of the conference said, "The County is proud to be a partner in this important and interesting conference. The visioning and idea sharing that takes place at conferences like this will help determine the environmental state of the earth we leave to future generations."

Other panelists include Gainesville Mayor Pegeen Hanrahan, Steve Seibert, Executive Director of The Governors Century Commission for a Sustainable Florida, , and many other experts in the field. The conference will address topics such as Sustainability in Local Government, Building Resource Efficient Communities, Waste-to-Energy Strategies, and many other subjects of interest to Florida communities.

The participation of interested citizens, government employees, and private sector representatives is greatly encouraged.
