Volunteers Sought for International Coastal Cleanup

9/28/2006 3:29 PM

3:26 p.m.

ALACHUA COUNTY - Alachua County is seeking individuals or groups to assist Current Problems, Inc. with this year's Coastal Cleanup event hosted by Gainesville Area Rowing (GAR) at Newnans Lake on Saturday, September 30.  Volunteers should meet at the pavilion at the GAR facility, located at the east end of University Avenue where it ends at the lake, at 8:30 a.m. to be assigned to a work site. Coffee will be available for those who arrive early.  The cleanup will conclude around noon.

This event contributes to the Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) each year. Volunteers can choose to work by foot, canoe, kayak, or power boat.  ANAMAR Environmental Consulting will be providing trucks to pick up garbage, boats to off-load canoes and tow them to work sites, an airboat and a couple of canoes. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own boats as well.

The Cleanup area is along Lakeshore Drive and Palm Point, the Powers and Windsor boat ramp parks, Hatchett and Little Hatchett Creeks, Lake Forest Creek and Prairie Creek.

The ICC "window" this year is from September 1 to October 31. Individuals and groups are welcomed to clean a portion of another waterway on their own on a different date, but are encouraged to schedule their fall cleanup during this window if it is convenient. Current Problems, Inc. will help with supplies and disposal.

To RSVP or for more information, citizens can call Fritzi S. Olson, Executive Director of Current Problems, Inc., at (352) 264-6827 or email her at aar@currentproblems.org.  RSVP is not required, but is helpful in assigning equipment.
