Board to Vote on Lowered Millage Rates

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL – On September 13, 2011, at 5 pm.  the Board of County Commissioners will hold the first of two public hearings to finalize the budget and set property tax millage rates for the 2011-2012 Fiscal Year (FY12).  The meeting will take place in room 209 in the County Administration Building located at 12 SE 1st Street in downtown Gainesville.  The Board is set to vote on millage rates that are lower than rates included in the “Notice of Proposed Property Taxes” (also known as the Truth in Millage Notice or TRIM Notice).  As required by Florida Statutes, this notice was sent out last month by the Alachua County Property Appraiser to all County property owners.

 

The General County millage rate, which funds all countywide services, will be lowered by approximately 2% from the TRIM Notice, and will result in no increase in projected property tax revenue for the upcoming budget year.  The Board has made reductions within County department budgets reflecting their revenue stabilization plan and no increase from property tax revenue.  Constitutional Officers funded from the General Fund are budgeted at the same level as the current year and are not being asked for any budget reductions.

 

Millage rates for all three Municipal Services Taxing Units (MSTU), levied by the Board of County Commissioners, are also set to decrease from those originally proposed in the TRIM Notice.  The Unincorporated MSTU rate will decrease by 8% and will result in a decrease in property tax revenue of $65,000 over the current fiscal year.  The Law Enforcement MSTU rate will decrease by 4% and will result in a decrease in property tax revenue of $178,000 over the current fiscal year.  The Fire Services MSTU rate will decrease by 5% and will result in a decrease in property tax revenue of $215,000 over the current fiscal year.

 

The overall FY12 County proposed budget is $318 million down $9 million from the  FY11 adopted budget of $327 million.
