Helping Those in Need

  • $877.00 from the Preservation and Enhancement District, provided turkeys for 77 families in Linton Oaks/Holly Heights. Alachua County Cooperative Extension's 4-H Program, and the Alachua County Sheriff's Office collected over 3,000 pounds of canned food and side items allowing families to celebrate a bountiful holiday meal.
  • The owner of Hidden Oaks Mobile Home Park, Alachua County Sheriff's Office COPS Unit, SWAG (Southwest Advocacy Group), and the apartment manager in the SW MIKE Zone, hosted a Christmas party/dinner for residents of Hidden Oaks MHP and surrounding communities.  Ten turkeys and hams were prepared on site by Sgt. David Tuck, Sgt. Josh Crews, and Deputy Nick Vickers.  Close to 500 people were served a holiday meal.  Terwilleger teachers, ASO K-9 "Keno", Gentle Carousel Miniature horses, McGruff the Crime Dog, the ASO Bomb Robot, and the Alachua County Bookmobile were on display at the event.  Children left with bicycle helmets donated by the City of Gainesville Bicycle/Pedestrian Program, coats and books, and Santa was on site for everyone to see.
  • On November 8 2010, the Alachua County "Strike Out Hunger" Food Drive spearheaded by Commissioner Rodney Long.  Citizens of Alachua County partnered with local agencies, and businesses to collect non-perishable food donations. 2000 pounds of canned food was distributed to seven local non-profit food pantries.
  • University of Florida College of Medicine Mobile Outreach Clinic completed 161 well women exams; primary care for men - 97 exams; and a total of 101 health screenings.  One of the goals of the mobile clinic is to make Alachua County a "Healthier Community."

Neighborhoods and Park

 

Investing in Targeted At-Risk Communities

  • Over $60,000.00 in donations, in-kind services, and $6,500.00 in volunteer hours, were reinvested in community revitalization in Southwest and East Gainesville.  The University of Florida Campus Kitchens in an attempt to reduce the impact of poverty, provided free meals to needy residents.  Also a faith based program offered by Suwannee River Baptist Church, provided a site and services for an after school program.
  • $49,999.00 in non-ad valorem tax dollars were invested in the Preservation and Enhancement district for the Southwest Gainesville communities.
    $16,776.00 was used for a lawn maintenance contract to sustain neighborhood beautification in the Linton Oaks, Holly Heights/Cedar Ridge communities, providing residents with bi-weekly mowing and litter pickup.
    Over $9,800.00 spent on rent and utilities to maintain an operational site for the Alachua County Sheriff's Office Holly Heights Substation.  This community based site offered programmatic activities such as 4-H Afterschool Program, weekly Girl Scouts, Community Council and Neighborhood Crime Watch Committee meetings.
  • A Housing and Urban Development grant (HUD Grant), will provide streetscaping, solar lighting and entrance signage to be installed in two neighborhoods and one park - Greentree Village, Hammock Oaks and the park on S.E. 35th Street.  All three sites are located on the eastside of Gainesville, adding safety and beautifcation.
  • The public and private partnerships, South West Advocacy Group (SWAG), asked the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners for support to develop a Community Resource Center/Alachua County Health Facility in southwest Gainesville.  The Community Resource Center will be managed by Partners for Strong Families.  Five to ten volunteers will staff the center, five days a week.
  • On December 10, 2010, a local architect conducted a Charette to develop a plan for the Community Resource Center, and has also offered pro bono hours.
